How Are Volcanoes Formed?
1. Place your bottle in the center of a piece of cardstock and draw a small circle around the neck.
2. Cut a straight line through the center of the circle through the card, then cut.
3. Stuff both sides of the card to form a cone shape. Place it in place, leaving a hole where you cut the circle.
Cut around the cone so it fits snugly, but make sure it’s still taller than your bottle.

4. Place the cone on top of the bottle. Press the top of the paper cone into the neck of the bottle to hold it in place. Place the base of the cone on the second sheet of card.
5. Use paint to paint the cone and make it a volcano. Allow your sample to dry completely.
6. In a bowl, mix bicarbonate of soda and rinse with water. Add water and mix well. Pour this mixture into your oven.
8. When ready, bottle the vinegar with the bicarbonate. Wait for it to erupt and watch the lava flow.

Instead of being one solid surface, the Earth’s crust and upper mantle (together called the lithosphere) are broken into several tectonic plates that float above the asthenosphere. It is a deep section of solid rock but very slow flowing.

Volcanoes are openings in the Earth’s crust through which rock, gas, and ash can escape. This mixture of materials is called magma when it is underground, lava when it erupts, and igneous rock when it cools and solidifies on the surface.

Massive Erupting Volcano
Stratovolcanoes are the most common and perhaps the most recognizable of volcanoes. Stratovolcanoes are steep and conical in shape. They are also called composite volcanoes.
They mostly erupt explosively and are often associated with plate boundaries. Their lava is viscous, meaning it does not spread much before cooling to the surface, giving the volcano its tall, cone-like profile.

Many villages were destroyed by pyroclastic flows, the most famous being the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Pyroclastic vents are superheated mixtures of ash, gases, and other volcanic material that move rapidly down the volcano.
It was a Plinian eruption, in which jets of magma and gas spewed from the volcano at high speeds. This type of eruption can last for days and produce huge plumes of ash and gas that can extend up to 55 kilometers in height.
Stromboli is another active stratovolcano in Italy, but it behaves differently from Vesuvius. This 2,000-year-old island volcano displays an explosive pattern. Small eruptions of magma – called fountains – usually last from a few minutes to a few hours. This type of eruption is known as a Strombolian eruption and has been shown by other volcanoes around the world such as Mount Erebus in Antarctica.
Shield volcanoes are usually not as tall as stratovolcanoes, although they can reach much higher heights. Olympus Mons is a shield volcano on the planet Mars. It is the largest volcano in the solar system with a length of 25 km and a diameter of 624 meters.

Volcanic eruptions are usually mild and non-eruptive but are known for lava flows and fountains. Shield volcanoes have lava flows (less viscous) that travel farther than the sticky lava of stratovolcanoes. This flow of lava causes it to slowly reach down the side of the volcano.

Shield volcanoes are usually located at hot spots on top of tectonic plates rather than at their boundaries. The most famous are Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Kea’u.
Other volcanoes around the world are also reporting moderate air eruptions. This type of eruption can produce lava fountains that can be hundreds of meters high and travel at speeds of up to 100 meters per second.

Cinder cones are small volcanoes made of volcanic material. Many are perennials and can grow on the sides of large volcanoes. They are usually operated by explosive pellets or lava fountains from a single line.
One of the most famous is Parícutin, a volcano discovered in 1943 in a cornfield in Michoacán, Mexico. Due to continuous thromboline eruptions, the volcano continued to grow until it stopped erupting in 1952. It was 300 meters high.

The largest and most explosive volcanoes on Earth are known as supervolcanoes, although they are not currently a scientifically defined type. These large volcanoes produce large calderas—volcanic craters created by the collapse of the volcano itself when the magma chamber below was empty.
