Zentangle is more than just doodling. The Zentangle Method is a trademark based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. Basically, making a zentangle involves drawing a “tangle” of lines, which are then filled in with repeating patterns or designs. Each zentangle is unique… because you draw a zentangle of lines and choose patterns to fill in the blanks.
You can use any kind of paper or pen, but for real zentang you’ll want to work with something basic. A fine, black pen – a Sharpie or Sakura Micron pen is a great choice. Since you are using a good marker, your paper should be smooth and work well with the marker. I use white cardstock when I have a zentangle. The paper you use for the zentangle should be square – 4 inches square…that’s a great size. However, you can create a completely different square size for your design. You can actually buy zentangle papers called “tiles” in different square sizes.
Now that you have the supplies and have drawn the lines, it’s time to fill in the zentangle patterns. I’m sharing some easy zentangle patterns to spark your creativity.
