There are lots of fun activities you can incorporate these fall printable leaves into. But before we allow ourselves to be inspired, we must educate ourselves! One question your child may ask you is why the leaves change color. Good question, right?
To answer this question, we first need to understand why leaves are green in the first place. They are green because of chlorophyll, which aids the plant’s photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which leaves obtain energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into “food.” On a tree, all the leaves work together in this process to “feed” the tree.
In the fall, when the temperature drops and the days get shorter, the leaves no longer produce energy to produce food. Chlorophyll begins to break down, meaning no more green! At this point, the color of other pigments and chemicals (eg orange) that have been present all along but have been masked by the abundance of chlorophyll begin to show. Other chemical changes also occur in the leaves, bringing more colors into play.

When presented with these fall leaf printables or real leaves, your child may wonder why leaves fall in the first place. Another great question, right? It looks like your child is very curious! π
As mentioned earlier, leaves are essential for producing “food” for trees, but as the temperature drops and the days get shorter, the leaves can no longer perform this task. At this point they are actually a burden on the tree. The tree needs all its energy to keep itself alive without supporting the already idle leaves, so a process occurs where the connection between the leaves and the tree closes and then the leaves fall off.
