Weaving on a cardboard loom is super fun and super easy to do. I first did this at school – my mum still has some of the things I did. I was the master weaver. ๐Ÿ˜€

In this tutorial I will learn how to make and weave a cardboard loom. This is a great activity for long car rides, waiting at the doctor’s office, or arts and crafts in the classroom. Weaving on a cardboard loom is also great for people of all ages – you can make lots of changes to make it suitable for people of all skill levels. You can do a lot with a simple cardboard loom.

Ways To Weave On A Loom

So come on, let’s learn how to weave on a cardboard loom and be the envy of primary school children everywhere! ๐Ÿ˜€

The yarn, scissors and needles can be changed as needed to match the age of the person you will be weaving with.

Young children and those with poor motor skills will benefit from using large plastic needles and thick yarn as they will be easier to handle. Advanced crafters/weavers can use finer needles and yarn. ๐Ÿ™‚

I use Lion Brand Yarn bonbon yarn for this – it’s very fine so it makes the finished yarn look really nice. ๐Ÿ˜€

You can really make it any size you want! For this project, I thought I’d do some dowel weaving. I use a 5×5 inch piece of cardboard.

Draw a line 1/2 inch in on each side of the loom. These are your guides and will be easier to hold.

Now you will draw the lines for the notches! In most cases, you want these to be 1/4 inch apart. However, you can make them as big as you want. The wider they are, the easier the weaving will be. ๐Ÿ™‚

Starting at the 1/2 inch line, make marks every 1/4 inch (or your chosen width) all the way around the top and bottom of the loom.

With the marked side of the loom facing up, thread some yarn into the first class on the top left. There should be a tail several inches behind the loom. Glue it to the back of the loom.

Bring the thread down to the lower left notch on the mouth and pull it into that notch. Bring the thread back to the front by bringing it up through the notch just to the right of the lower left edge.

Continue doing this all the way through the loom – the pictures will explain it better. On the front side of the loom with yarn going from notch to notch, the back of the loom will be just small sections of yarn looped around the hooks. Leave a tail from the end of the yarn and glue it to the back of the sail as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cut a length of yarn (it’s easier to work with shorter at first – no more than 2 feet) and thread the yarn through the needle. I like to tie a knot so it stays in the needle – it tends to fall out if you don’t.

You will use the needle to feed the yarn through the loop in an over-and-over pattern. (Under the first string, over the second, one hundred, etc.) When the needle has gone through all the strings, pull the yarn through, leaving a few inch tail at the end. Push the yarn onto the loom so that it is about 1/4 inch from the notches.

Bring the needle and yarn back through the loop from the side you just left with an overheat pattern opposite your first row and pull the yarn through. (If your first line of yarn goes under the last row on the right, it should go over the last row to start the second row.) Don’t pull the yarn too hard – you don’t want to tighten the yarn. . strings to the loom!

Every few rows it’s a good idea to use your thumbs to push the yarn up against the strings so it looks nice and uniform.

When you come to the end of a color, take it to one edge of the loom and leave a tail of a few inches hanging from the side. You can cut a length of yarn that is the same color or introduce a new color.

Take your new length of yarn and insert it on the same side as your last tail. You will follow the same overly constructed rules as before. So if the tail of the yarn ends under the last string, you will start your new yarn to go over it. Pull your yarn through making sure to leave a tail at the end.

I’ve included some photos from the launch of the new yarn lengths – I think they explain it better than words!

So you’ve filled your loom, but now you have lots of crazy yarn ends everywhere. We are going to use the needle to insert these points into the sides of the weave.

Try to pull the ends of the yarn through a weave of the same color. This will help cover the marks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Remove the tape from the long threads at the back of the loom. Release the upper loops first, and then the lower ones. Keep the weaving close to the top and pull up the top loops.

You want to pull the string through the weave so that the bottom loops are brought up to be flush with the bottom of the weave, and the top loops get extra length.

Once the weave is cut all the way down into the strings, you can cut the top loops in the middle and tie them off.

After you’ve attached the loops, you’ll have two more lengths of wire to take care of. We are going to deal with them as we did with the loose ones in step seven.

The only difference here is that you will want to bring the wire over the first layer of the weave and then push it through the side. By pulling it over the top of the weave, you prevent the string from pulling completely out of the weave. You have to secure it in that. ๐Ÿ™‚

And now you are done! Enjoy your coaster, placemat, loincloth, pincushion, or something else totally awesome you’ve just woven. ๐Ÿ˜€

Let me know if you have any questions or comments below. Especially if you have suggestions for easier ways to complete the weaving! Weaving simple cardboard trinkets was the norm at our nature-themed summer camp last year. Making your owl loom is so simple and uses materials you probably have lying around your house. Although it’s just cardboard, with a little care you can reuse it over and over to make all kinds of woven creations.

You will need a cardboard rectangle. If you don’t have a box with a flap big enough to use, cut a rectangle from the side of the box. This piece of cardboard needs to be pretty stiff, so if you only have thinner boxes, like a cereal box, try cutting several pieces the same size and glue them together to make a stronger piece.

It is important to know that your finished weave will be about 3/4 the width of your piece of cardboard. If you want your finished weaving to be a specific size, be sure to cut a piece of cardboard slightly wider than that measurement. The longest your fabric will be is the length of your cardboard minus a few inches.

For example: If your cardboard rectangle is 8 inches across and 12 inches long, you can expect your finished weaving to be about 6 inches wide and up to 9 or 10 inches long.

Cut two thin strips of cardboard about 1/2 inch wide and the same length as the width of your large rectangle. Adhere these strips to your large rectangle, about 1/2 inch from each side, as shown. Let them dry before moving on to the next step.

Cut small slits on one side of the cardboard, 1/2 inch apart. You want to space them evenly so that your weave comes out nice and even. I find it easier to measure and draw lines first, then cut. To easily remove and attach your work at the end, make an even number of cuts.

Your loom is done! Now you need to add the rope through which you will weave your fabric. In weaving parlance this is called the warp thread and the process becomes intricate from your lips. To tighten your new cardboard sail, it is best to use twine or non-stretchable yarn. As you weave, you will pull on the warp
