We share the task of writing a Christmas letter by drawing names and then writing about that family member’s year. When children were young, they needed the help of adults, but they could come up with some good lines for their adopted family member. The letters we create this way are more intelligent and informative than I wrote myself.

My friends and family’s favorite (and the one I’m most proud of) was like the front page of a newspaper, but on a much smaller scale. I know that for some people, writing a family Christmas letter feels like a chore, and others think that sending a letter at Christmas is just plain old fashioned, especially with the use of social media and instant updates. However, I LOVE sending and receiving Christmas letters and cards! I even kept many of the Christmas cards and letters I received from family and friends from past Christmases. Whether you’re new to sending Christmas letters or looking for ways to revive the same old Christmas letter that goes out every year, here are some tips for sending memorable Christmas letters and cards.

1. Take the pressure off yourself to send the perfect card and letter. It doesn’t have to be traditional or serious. The recipient will appreciate that you thought of them.

2. Edit, edit, edit! You don’t need to mention every single thing you and your family did during the year. Stick to the essentials, otherwise your letter will sound like a list or a monologue. Keep the letter to one page and highlight the highlights of the year rather than giving detailed accounts. Edit your letter for spelling and grammar. Have someone read it if necessary.

3. Take good care of yourself. Keep things simple and fun. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as political views. (Yes, I received Christmas letters that included political views and opinions!)

5. Don’t use too small or too small a font and don’t try to fit everything on one page. This makes the letter difficult to read. Use an easy-to-read size 12 font, certainly no smaller than size 10, and adjust your letter to fit well on one page without saying too much.

6. If your letter has a lot of text, break it up with pictures. Use images sparingly and make them large enough to see.

7. Be creative with the style of your letter. Make it look like a real newsletter by creating headlines, headlines and articles about things that happened during the year.

8. Think outside the box. Your letter doesn’t have to be a letter at all. One of my favorite letters I sent that year was a multiple choice question about our family that year with questions on one side and answers on the back. You can also make a list like “Ten places visited” or “Ten best times of the year”. Consider writing from a different perspective. How will your pet or newborn baby determine a year?
