Using a color photo inkjet printer works best. Digital label designs should be printed on 8.5″x11″ self-adhesive paper and then cut out each label with a paper cutter or sharp scissors. I do not recommend using pre-cut label papers as they are difficult to line up and the paper itself is of poorer quality.

1. How do I download the labels? Printable labels come as jpeg or pdf. You can open the PDF file in a PDF viewer (included with most computers). If not, you can download Adobe reader for free here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/ or open the jpeg in a program of your choice.

2. What kind of adhesive paper should I use? Regardless of color and design, I recommend printing on white paper with an adhesive backing to make your images bold and vibrant.
I always email my clients with their labels already set up as 8″.5×11″ printable image sheets to save time and sticker paper. For example, a 2.3″x2.9″ label comes with 9 label images per 8.5″x11″ sheet.
The most basic and generally least expensive printing option is a standard matte sticker paper. I keep this on hand and use it for most of my basic label projects (like adult plastic hand sanitizer bottles) or if I’m testing products. The final prints are usually not as vibrant as they appear on screen (but it can work even better depending on the colors of your label design), but the print dries quickly and for the price it works.
With today’s decal craze, vinyl sticker paper has become very popular with more and more options! There are many choices in price, thickness, adhesive (permanent or removable), waterproof, stain resistant, drying time and how it performs on a curved surface.
New To The Store: Personalized Labels For Mini Wine Bottles
To make the labels for my small wine bottles I use PaperVisual vinyl sticker paper which is usually used for decals. This sticker paper comes in matte and gloss and is waterproof, so if it gets wet, the labels won’t wear right away. I find that the label colors are more vibrant when I use this paper. It can take up to 5 minutes to dry, so don’t use it if you’re in a hurry.
One of my favorite features of this vinyl sticker paper is that it can be moved. This is GOLD!!! I like to get my decals level and it can take a few tries and this vinyl paper allows for mistakes.
TIP: When applying the label, I attach the center of the label to the bottle first. Then I slowly continue to leave the attached label to the right and left as I push out the air bubbles.
3. Can I use the card? Since the labels must be applied to a curved bottle, I do not recommend using heavy paper. You have to add your own glue and it won’t stick well to small wine bottle labels. If you decide to punch a hole in the corner of the label and use it as a label, I recommend following the label printing instructions here.

4. Why does the final print have a white border? The most overlooked component of home printing comes with the printer settings. Be sure to adjust the printer settings for your color printer. The setting options will vary depending on the printer manufacturer. Therefore, before printing on sticker paper (as there is a limited number of sheets per pack), test the print on regular copy paper.
Most of the time I use “BLACK FREE PRINT” because I don’t want the printer to shrink my image and to make sure no extra white band is added to the outer edge of the image. I always choose “BEST PHOTO” even if I’m not printing a photo (I think it’s best to treat a printable photo as a photo, not a document). These settings are usually found under the advanced settings option.
Be sure to select the correct “PAPER TYPE” setting. This is particularly important since the self-adhesive backing paper comes in both matte and glossy. When working with specialty paper, manufacturers include printer instructions that tell you which paper settings to use. They may not work for you, so print a page first as a test.

Once you find a combination that works for you, keep the solid paper in stock AND write down the printer settings (write directly on the paper container). That way, if months go by between printing projects, you don’t have to rely on your memory or start from scratch! I always like to keep my favorite papers in stock for those last minute projects.
If you prefer to print your labels with FedEx Printing, Staples, Office Max, Kinkos, etc., they will be able to guide you. Make sure they don’t lead you to pre-cut label paper.
