Paper Mache Hot Air Balloon – Remember when we made an Easter egg out of tissue paper, PVA glue and glitter paint? After it was filled with little Easter treats, I said we’d turn it into something else we could use during playtime.
And here it is! Get ready to go on many adventures around the world with Little Ted as our hot air balloon pilot!

*I trimmed the opening a bit to make it big enough to fit inside my hand.

* Then I used embroidery floss to stitch a small criss-cross through some small holes in the center at the top and thread the piece to hang the balloon.
* I made two small holes in the bottom on either side of the hole and threaded the ribbon through them.
* We found a small basket, passed the other end of the ribbon through the handles and tied it.
* We were looking for a small toy to add to the basket for the eager adventurer and found a little space in the ceiling to hang on a nail.

We have already started using this balloon for its intended purpose.. story telling. To tell a story without a book, you have to let go of your inhibitions and not worry a bit about what anyone might think! Since your audience is usually only knee-deep, they’re into any story and won’t notice if it’s not very good or if you’re making it up as you make it.
Oral storytelling is powerful because research shows it encourages us to use a wider and richer range of words and depth of ideas than if we had read only a few books. More importantly, it means we can maintain eye contact with our children while talking, which teaches excellent communication and feedback skills.
By modeling storytelling in this way, we help our children become confident storytellers and draw on their imaginations more deeply as they tell and write their own stories in the future. Keki (2 years 8 months) is already joining the story line to give me ideas and words to enrich the story and make it my own. There’s no reason the average 3 1/2-year-old can’t start telling these stories on his own, and that’s an exciting thought!
I’ll post again soon to let you know what we’re going to do with the stories we’re telling, but for now we’ll have to imagine a wonderful world of cake and ice cream where Little Ted can eat from candy-covered trees and look at birds with purple and orange spots in his telescope. Look! Lots of amazing images that we can imagine in our minds and describe with language.

Gently smooth the patch over the strips with your fingertips. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying additional coats. Apply multiple layers if necessary.
Attach the cup to the bottom of the tightly wrapped balloon using a hot glue gun. Cover the cup with cling film. Add additional plaster as needed to achieve a smooth surface.
Measure the required dimensions of the small cube used as the balloon basket. Cut out the shape using a ruler. Cut out the sides of the bottom square and fold the cardboard into a cube shape. Secure the sides by gluing them in place.
Attach four strings to each corner of the cube. Then attach each string to the bottom of the balloon shape with masking tape.

Choose a design for the balloon. The design can be painted, painted or decoupage Riged wrap surface. When finished, apply a glossy sealer such as Mod Podge to the design to give the ball a glossy finish.
Glue the burlap to the cardboard cube using liquid glue. Dye the burlap a natural fiber color to look like a wicker basket.
Hang the balloon and let the sculpture dry completely. After drying, it is ready for display. As part of our arts and crafts program run by Gemma, we are currently making papier mache balloons – last week we got the inspiration you can see in the photo, we then started the process by covering the balloons with PVA glue and newspaper, we have at least 3- Make 4 layers and let them harden, the balloon will then burst, resulting in a balloon shaped shell, then the fun part, we are going to paint and decorate them with our baskets and attach them with string. It will then be hung from the ceiling in our reception room – we can’t wait to share our creations with you.

It takes several days to make a balloon. I start by making a balloon base, several layers of recycled newspaper, glue and water. After a day of drying, you can paint it white and draw a spiral with a pencil. I prepared the base, painted and varnished by hand. Then I tie the rope to make the net, I make a basket out of wood, rope, glue and a small metal ring wrapped in thread, I make four cargo bags, a ladder and a small wire ring that connects the net. In the basket, I then combine all these elements, carefully tying the threads so that the basket is balanced. As a final touch, I make a sign and write it by hand
