Have you ever seen a war movie and thought, “What is Foxtrot? who is charlie Did someone say Tango?” These unusual words belong to a powerful coded language known as the military alphabet. Repair men and women use this language to improve clarity of communication and sometimes as a slang language.
There are 27 code words in the military alphabet. Each represents one letter of the English alphabet. For example, “Alfa” means “A”, “Bravo” means B, and so on. Multiple code words are often combined into words or phrases. For example, to say “dog” you would say “Delta-Oscar-Golf”. None of the 27 code words sound the same, so there’s no mistaking what’s being said when it’s spelled like this.
You may have noticed that many English letters sound the same. For example, it is common to mix “B” with “P”, “C” with “E”, and so on. For most of us, this kind of mistake could result in a mislabeled package or a misspelled dinner invitation. But for a soldier or fighter pilot, a misdirected command or radio signal can mean life or death.

The military alphabet was also a very useful tool in civilian life. Here are just a few examples:

During the first half of the 20th century, several different spelling alphabets came into use. Then, in 1957, NATO and the US introduced a joint system that is still in use.
Earliest use at the beginning of the twentieth century. AM radio technology allowed pilots to coordinate with ground control, but poor signal and radio interference caused frequent errors. To solve this problem, flying associations began using code words to represent easily interchangeable letters.
Later, in 1927, the International Telegraph Union (ITU) developed an orthographic alphabet for telegraphic communication. Over time, this system grew in popularity. At the start of World War II, most commercial airlines around the world used ITU code words.
Another major development occurred in 1941, around the start of the Second World War. At this time, the United States established a standard spelling language across all branches of the armed forces. The Joint Army/Navy phonetic alphabet, also known as the “Able Baker Charlie” alphabet, has been heard in movies and television shows since the 1950s. It has even made its way into modern World War II film productions such as Saving Private Ryan.

In 1957, the US Armed Forces and NATO adopted a common alphabet known as the International Radiotelephone Spelling Alphabet (IRSA) or NATO Phonetic Alphabet for short. This system was developed by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Authority) after years of careful research and testing. ICAO has critically tested all code words in many popular dialects. As a result, the IRSA has stood the test of time as an international standard.
The US government initially classified IRSA as secret, but soon after released it to the public. IRSA is still used today and has become more popular over time. Today, we have introduced this extraordinary code language simply because the “military alphabet” is no longer supported by older versions of your web browser to ensure that user data remains secure.
