It is very important to file a police report immediately after the accident. This can be a vital step in recovering compensation. After you file a police report, you may need to get a copy of it at a later date or make changes to an inaccurate report. For everything you need to know about police traffic accident reports, see:

Handling Your Auto Accident Case Without A Lawyer In Orlando

If you have been involved in a car accident and have filed a police report, you have the right to receive a copy of that report. Section 316.066 of the Florida Statutes provides that parties involved in an accident have the right to receive a report earlier than the 60-day waiting period that uninvolved parties must consider. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, you can request a copy of the report through your local police department or online.

It is not uncommon for police reports to contain errors. Fortunately, sometimes changes can be made to a police report after it has been filed. The simplest types of errors are errors of fact, such as the make and model of the vehicles involved, the time of the accident, the weather at the time, the type of insurance, injuries and damages. If the police report contains incorrect information about any fact, you can correct it by presenting evidence to the contrary.

Another type of error that is made in police reports is debatable errors, errors that rely on human judgment. For example, commenting on who was at fault in an accident is a questionable error. These types of police report errors are much more difficult to correct. Changing a false police report can be even more difficult if there were no witnesses to the accident to testify on your behalf. Usually, instead of changing the police report, you can write your own version of the truth and request that it be attached to the police report.

If you are filing a claim with your insurance company or a personal injury claim for damages, you may need access to a police report. Traffic accident police reports are usually on file for years, so accessing your report should not be a problem. Since the statute of limitations in Fort Lauderdale for filing a personal injury case for a car accident is only four years from the date of injury, per Florida Statutes Chapter 95, your police report must be available within that time frame.
