The answer was simple. Many times I tried to fit too many things into the game plan. I tried to use many concepts from many structures. There are often over 100 different calls in our game plan. The problem was that we could not practice everything that we wanted to do in the game. We have wasted too much time on concepts that we cannot implement. Many of you are probably shaking your heads while doing the same!

I decided to take an analytical approach. We had about 50 team reps, 25 indoor runs, 25 aerial reps and 25 7-on-7 reps each day. If we had a four-day workout, we’d do 500 reps a week. These 500 repetitions were sacred. We had to make sure that we used them wisely so that we were ready every week.

The first thing we did was reduce the number of calls in our game plan. In a normal game we play 70 to 85 games. We are not going to show 85 different plays. We replay the game during the game. And often we find a call that works and repeat it over and over again. Once we find a shape and concept that works, we often implement that concept multiple times.

When we started creating our game plan, we started with the menu. Our menu consisted of 24 items that we deemed the best for Friday night. When I talk about menus, I talk about entire calls. That’s how we prepared the menu. We answered a worksheet of 63 questions while watching a film of our opponents. The answers to these questions helped us clearly see the strengths and weaknesses of the defence. Below is the screenshot of first 12 questions of this paper.

We looked at four areas of security. First, we wanted to know how they fit in. We looked at their alignment to determine which structures would affect us, giving us the numbers and the green grass. Where can we get alignment benefits?

Second, we checked their employees. Who were their best players? Who was his worst player? Where can we find a game that we can win? This is an important part of game planning which will help us win many games. One season we played with a team with the best defence. They shut down our offense in the first quarter. However, we knew we could win. Our X receiver was better than their corner. He put his corner on the island to stop the run. We scored three goals in the first half, all on the vertical line for our X. We ran 35 plays for 220 yards in the first half. 170 of these yards came on 3 long passes for our X.

Third, we wanted to know when they would splash. When did he say pressure to 5 and 6 people? This helped us figure out when to call up our screens. If a team hit 75 percent of their attacks so we were on second and middle, we would call our screens on those downs.

Fourth, we wanted to know how they handle tempo. did they get together? How did he call? What was his reaction to high-speed crimes? A few years back we played a team that was physically better than us. They were huge before. One weakness was that they could not keep up with the pace. If the offense played fast, they would not line up. It was not our job to beat them, but our pace got the better of them.

After analyzing these four areas, we begin to create our menu. We want 24 items every week. We then had 12 items. This gave us a total of 36 games to call. If our preparation was excellent, then we should not be distracted by this list. Below are the two screenshots showing the weekly menu. This is a simple Excel worksheet that we can customize for each week.

After creating the menu, we start filling out the call sheet. Our call sheet is very unique as it lets us custom call scripts based on the situations we face in each game. Analyzed what we did in each season, how many times we faced each down and away situation. Then we created a script for each position with a column for the left hash, right hash, and middle hash. For each situation, we’ll go over the defenses you’re most likely to encounter. This helped us create a set of plays that we thought would utilize the defense for each position. The games on the call sheet came straight from our menu. Most of these plays will be repeated throughout this draft. Below is a screenshot of our call sheet along with the scenario script.

The number of plays we wrote for each position depended on how many times we faced that position in each game. We will have 2 over and middle calls and 2 more short calls. By putting these scripts on our call sheets, we were able to call Friday night plays much faster. We were able to make better plays based on what the defense was doing against us. Every time we called a play, I would be red or green during the play. The red mark meant that the match was not positive. A green icon means it’s good. It gave us a reference point to go through the game. Normally, every time we were faced with that exact situation, I’d ditch the script.

On the other side of our challenge sheet were sections for additional important areas of our game plan. We had a call section for our best athletes to bring the ball down the open field. We wanted to make sure our top athletes got enough quality touch. We’ve got calls for every lineup. This is what our game menu looked like. We had another section with special coverage batons. We also have a pitch based scenario for our last game. There were other sections that helped us make better calls during combat.
