One thing I learned from two little boys running around the house is that things can get loud! (Okay, so only one of them is old enough to run now but it sure is enough for both of them).

Paper Bag Mouse Puppet

My oldest son seems to go through phases of whatever animal he wants to pretend to be. We have recently come out of the long dinosaur phase. He runs around the house roaring and trying to scare everyone. Things went to a whole other level after I made him his own dinosaur mask to go with it!

Lately, he’s been on a farm animal kick. He started making loud pig noises but his seal started hurting his throat and so we switched to cow. He goes around the house “MOOing” loudly. He was very nice about it, I must say. He always asks if his brother is sleeping so he can adjust his MOOOOO levels!

Now that I’m writing this, I can’t believe what a bull he is. My son has just learned a few jokes and they all have to do with a strange cow. His favorite joke (which our whole family, neighbors and even the mailman can tell you) goes something like this.

After hearing that joke a few hundred times, my husband and I tried to teach him some new jokes to add to the rotation. No matter how hard we try, it always comes back to the space cow.

Anyway, after a long story, what I’m trying to get is my brother’s inspiration for this cow character puppet. I thought this was a great little activity for us to do together and it gave him a cute puppet to make moo sounds with.

And today I will show you how to make a paper bag cow puppet! I created a free printable template that you can download from the bottom of this post.

The first thing I did after printing the template was cut out all the pieces. My kids aren’t great with scissors yet but if yours are, this is a great activity to help them practice. Especially beef cows, because even if they don’t cut it completely, it still looks good.

Next, we started gluing. Feel free to copy the example I made or rearrange the places you like!

There are two small things I would like to point out. The first is to stick the mouth under the flap. It should mostly be at the bottom and rise slightly from the bottom.

The second point is to glue the cow’s eyes first so that you can glue on his nose. In my example they overlap so the nose is in front.

After everything is glued it’s time to play! I hope you all enjoyed this fun paper bag cow craft as much as we did!
