How To Make Grinch Ornaments – Posted by Kim Connor | Nov 20, 2019 |Christmas, Crafts, Cricut Projects, DIY & Crafts, Freebies, Holidays, Tutorials | 2 |
This Christmas, the family on my side decided to exchange decorations instead of gifts. Of course I couldn’t just buy decorations, so I opened up my Cricut and vinyl to make four unique and fun decorations! I bought clear glass ornaments from Walmart and started creating a concept for everyone. I have the blade thing right now so mine is a given. Olivia went straight to the unicorn, and Todd chose the Grinch. Mason was the only one who hesitated, and after some thought I decided on the Flamingo. I have an inside joke about the pink bird in my family, so I thought she’d enjoy being funny. Want to see them all?
How To Make Grinch Ornaments
There are so many amazing unicorn ornaments out there. Here’s my take on clay horns, reclaimed flowers I found in one of my craft drawers, tulle bristles and vinyl faces.

Last but not least, the Grinch. Made of vinyl throughout, including the vinyl heart on the back.
I created each one in Cricut Design Space and saved my files so you can easily create your own! LLama is part of the Cricut image library. I created the unicorn and flamingo models and uploaded a simple image of the grinch and cleaned it up using design space. All designs are for personal use only.
I didn’t take photos of the process, but I’ve highlighted each one below. The first step is always the same:
Using acrylic paint, pour a small amount into the ornament and carefully turn the ornament until good coverage is obtained. Add a little more paint and keep turning until the interior is completely covered. Invert the decorations on paper towels and let dry overnight.

Once the ornament is colored, simply open the file above and cut out the vinyl sides and paper ears. Glue the pink eartips to the white eartips. Fold the bottom of the ear over and glue on the ornament. Peel off the vinyl side and stick it to the ornament. Finally, use thick wire to attach it to the edge of the ornament. I used a piece of yarn to zigzag the edges and glued them on as I went. When I’m done, I cut off the curls so that each piece looks like hair.
Once the ornament is painted, simply open the above file and cut out the vinyl side. Peel off the vinyl side and stick it to the ornament. Using pink tulle, attach it to the edge of the ornament. Cover the messy ends with a ribbon.
Once the ornament is colored, simply open the file above and cut out the vinyl sides and paper ears. Glue the pink eartips to the white eartips. Fold the bottom of the ear over and glue on the ornament. Peel off the vinyl eyes and glue them to the ornament. Using clay, roll the two colors into a small snake about 1 inch long. Arrange side by side and roll into trumpets. Bake according to the directions on the clay package. After cooling, attach the horns to the decorations. Glue small flowers between the horn and the ear. Using small pieces of tulle, attach behind and around the horns to create the mane.
Believe it or not, this is the hardest of the four, and that’s just because it’s the most complex of the vinyls. I didn’t have yellow vinyl so I colored in some white prints and cut the vinyl. lol Once the decorations are painted just open the file above and cut out the face and heart from the vinyl. I didn’t use transfer tape for this, I just peeled and glued the face to the eyelet trim. Do what works best for you. Flip the ornament over and add a fun heart, because we all know the Grinch really is a slob!
