In fact, many people in the city are illiterate so the buses are color coded according to their destination.

Central America is not a continent. Continents are large land masses embedded in large tectonic plates, which are parts of the Earth’s rigid outer layer that partially cover a molten layer and move relative to each other. Central America is embedded in a tectonic plate, but both the land and the plate are smaller than the continents it bridges, North America and South America, so it is not considered a continent.
Central America experiences many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because it is located where many seismic plates meet and press against each other. These plates can suddenly break and slide, releasing energy as earthquakes. Volcanoes are also common at these plate boundaries.
In the early 16th century, several conquistadors visited Central America, but they did not settle. One such conqueror was Rodrigo de Bastidas, who established Spain’s claim to Central America in 1501. The first permanent Spanish settlement in Central America was established in 1510, when Vasco Nunez de Balboa and his crew settled near the present-day Colombian border – Panama.
Spanish is the most widely spoken language in Central America due to Spanish colonization of the region beginning in the late 15th century. Belize is the only Central American country that is not Spanish-speaking, largely because British colonists overthrew the Spanish there, and in the 19th century Britain officially replaced Spain as the territory’s governing authority.

Central America, the southernmost region of North America, lies between Mexico and South America and includes Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize. (Geologists and physical geographers sometimes extend the northern limit to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico.)
Central America forms the largest part of the tapering isthmus that separates the Pacific Ocean from the Caribbean Sea to the west. It stretches from northwest to southeast in an arc about 1,140 miles (1,835 km) long. The isthmus is only 30 miles (50 km) wide at its narrowest point and is no more than 125 miles (200 km) offshore from Central America.
Wet marshes and lowlands dot both the west and east coasts, but four-fifths of Central America is hilly or mountainous. The western belt of the Pacific Coastal Plain is narrow and shadowed by mountain ranges, and the eastern plains along the Caribbean, except for Nicaragua and Honduras, are also narrow. Elevation rises steadily westward from the Caribbean plains, toward the Pacific coast, culminating in about 40 highland peaks and volcanic cones, some reaching elevations of over 12,000 feet (3,700 m). Some volcanoes in Central America erupt violently from time to time and earthquakes are frequent in the region. However, the weathered volcanic lava produces fertile soil, however, and the highlands of the volcanic regions have therefore become highly productive agricultural zones and densely populated areas.
The climate of Central America is essentially tropical, moderated by proximity to the sea, altitude, latitude, and regional topography. As a result, they can change significantly in a short distance. Elevation moderates the climatic effects of Central America’s tropical latitudes, so the average temperature in the highlands is much lower than in the coastal plains. Precipitation occurs mainly in summer and is heaviest between May and November. January to March are dry months. On average, the Caribbean side receives about twice as much rain as the Pacific side.
