Picking pumpkins is my favorite fall activity. Every year we find the perfect pumpkin to make, carve and decorate the house (see what we did last year here). This year our pumpkins came from Happy Day Farms open fields. Besides the pumpkin patch, they have two other attractions that we love. There is “Pumpkinville” with an impressive view such as a wooden house with pumpkins stacked from floor to ceiling. They also have a sunflower field with fun and colorful props like gates and swings for great photo ops.

Pet Inspired Halloween Pumpkins

There are lots of fun ways to decorate and make pumpkins (check out some fun craft ideas here). The kids love to paint with washable paints and I love using them as flower pots. This year I am taking the time to return to my favorite fall hobby of carving pumpkins.

Carving pumpkins is a fun and creative activity. With the right tools and templates, anyone can carve beautiful and intricate designs. My favorite and best carved pumpkins are from my dogs, Bella and Barney. Bella is an 11-year-old husky and German shepherd, and Barney is a 10-year-old goldendoodle.

I used this free dog breed template from Better Homes & Gardens to make this awesome pumpkin carving. This carving combines cutting and etching to create dimensions when the gourd is turned. Etching is when you scratch the top layer of the pumpkin, while carving is when you cut into the pumpkin. The template tells you exactly where to carve and etch, and the end result is impressive. It took me 1.5 hours to sculpt Bella and Barney. See below for details on how to make an awesome pumpkin carving for your dog at home.

Pumpkin Carving // 24 Free Dog Breed Stencils

TIPS: Prepare the pumpkin for carving by cutting off the stem and removing the string and seeds from the inside. The walls of the pumpkin are a little thinner to make it easier to carve. Print the template twice and glue one on the pumpkin. Use pins, pushpins, or nails to push the paper along the lines into the pumpkin. Once all the lines are printed, remove the paper and let your hole guide you as you cut out the pattern. All shaded areas will be cut. Use the second copy of the swatch as a reference.
