Take a basic diagram of a flower. It’s not exactly a perfect circle. It just has to be round. Add a guide to mark the center of the rose. My guide is a rounded diamond shape.
A rose is a bundle of petals that expand from the center outwards. As we move away from the center, the petals open more.
Start with small, narrow petals that fit into the center guide. Remember this is just a sketch. Details will be added later.
Petals do not grow in patterns nor do they form in regular straight rows. Instead, they alternately overlap each other, becoming larger and wider as they move away from the center.

Once the basic sketch is complete, start highlighting the anatomy of the petals. Add details and outlines with a sharp red pencil.
When we redraw the sketch, we add little things. Rose petals are curved and grow unevenly. Use a combination of straight and curved lines to create a character in each petal.
Think of each individual petal as its own unit, with its own story. Each petal may also seem to age at its own rate.
Some are completely rounded and rounded. Some have corners. Others may have minor cracks and tears. Petals may curl and crumple.

A seemingly simple line drawing can convey a lot. A line is a language, so it can be interesting to play with the weight of each line. Keep the pencil sharp, press to darken some selected areas, and keep it fluid and loose in others. Variation creates volume and movement.

1. Hold the paper vertically. Start with a round “eyeball” shape in the very center of the rose. Take your first petal at the top of the bud. Any petals you draw after that will be connected to the one you just drew and will move clockwise.
2. Continue adding petals in a clockwise direction. You need four petals for the next round of petals.
3. When you go to the middle, you will have five petals, they will be bigger and have irregular edges.
5. Look carefully at this shade. Notice how each petal is dark ONLY on the side closest to the center. The edges remain white.
