How To Make Your Own Bulletin Board Letters

We’ve come a long way from my mom’s font designs and a punching machine with boring, run-of-the-mill letters.

However, I still carve my own letters. In today’s world we have been able to overcome one step… tracking!

You might think this is the easiest part, but for me it’s the hardest. There are so many fonts to choose from! CG fonts, Hello fonts, Cupcake fonts, MTF fonts… the list goes on.

I like to use PowerPoint for all my documents. So after I’ve chosen the font, I print out the letters I want on the board. I like PowerPoint because (in my opinion) it is the easiest program to use when using text boxes. I can format the letters more easily so I can fit more on the page.

Make sure the case is correct. If you want them big, make them bigger. If you need them smaller, try to fit more on the page. You can use a vertical pattern or a horizontal pattern to use larger or smaller fonts.

Make sure the “fill” of the letter is white or “no fill” and the outline of the letter is black. This is what will replace the tracing as only the outline will appear when you print.

You can even make the outline of the letter thicker, so you can add a black line to the board title (see example below).

I love using Astrobrights for my paper! If you want black letters, you’ll need to add an extra step. You can print letters from your computer on white paper. Then take the black construction paper (cut to size) and use the copier to copy the letters from the white paper onto the black construction paper. You can also print the letters with black fill from a printer. But that takes a lot of ink!

You can also laminate for durability. I would laminate before cutting and then cut once while the paper is laminated. Less cutting, remember?

The fonts you have installed on your computer are probably not the ones you want for your bulletin boards. You want yours to be cool and pretty, so you’ll need to find some to install on your computer. The first font I’m using in this tutorial is from Hello Literacy Fonts on Teachers Pay Teachers and it’s called Hello Texas. (You will need to download all your fonts into one zip and select Hello Texas or any other font you want to use). I love Hello Literacy Fonts for many reasons – but most importantly for you, its fonts are free to download for personal use only. This means that

At this point, you can play around with the size. I wanted to fit two letters on a sheet of paper landscape so 550 worked for me. Using a different font will require a different size. If you want even bigger letters, you can work with the image in portrait mode. I stuck with landscape mode because a lot of my characters are actually wider than they are tall.

Here you can see my B is hanging off the page. Click on the letter to redraw the box, then click and drag to place the letter on the page.
