Feathers Template – I’m always in awe of the giant angel wing art you often see in interior design stores. As I had some time on my hands at the moment I decided to make myself paper angel wings wall decor using an old road map to make feathers.
Before using the upcycled shuttlecocks I made some small feather angel wing ornaments. This time I want to make a bigger wall decoration.

If you follow my blog, you’ll know that my two main upcycling passions are denim and maps. I’ve made denim feathers in the past and although using this to make angel wings looks fantastic, this time I decided to use a map.
Paper Feathers Template
Many feathers of different sizes are needed to decorate the wall of these angel wings. I love using old maps for my paper crafts because they add extra interest to the project.
These paper wings can be personalized with custom location maps. A street map of Los Angeles (City of Angeles) would be perfect for this craft. Unfortunately, I do not have one in my collection of old maps.
Road maps not only look beautiful but are valuable crafting materials. If you don’t have an old one, you can often pick it up at thrift stores and flea markets for cheap. This still works out cheaper than buying kraft paper and is more environmentally friendly.
I know that going to the craft store is very difficult for many of us these days. So when we stay at home we like to make things around us. The great thing about this project besides the road map and the glue is that the only other material needed is some scrap cardboard packaging.

I found an old wooden frame to decorate the paper angel wings and hang them above our bed now. It seems that angel wings are a symbol of protection in these difficult times in the world today.
1.. The first thing is to make a wing template in cardboard. Draw half an angel’s wing on the cardboard and cut it out.
Then draw around this wing shape on another piece of cardboard and cut out the shape. If you flip over these wings, you will have a pair of angel wings that are mirror images of each other.
2. Next, make a feather from the paper map. Cut out three feather-sized patterns on thin card. Use this template to draw and cut map feathers.

If the map is empty on one side, draw around the hair on this side as the line will be easy to see. Also, if you layer the map paper you can cut more than one leaf at a time. I put 3 pieces of map paper together and cut out 3 leaves at a time.
3. How many feathers your map will need depends on the size of your angel’s wing art. For each wing I used, 11 large feathers, 15 medium-sized feathers and 24 small feathers.
Note that the fur is curved you need to cut 2 sets of fur. One for each side of the angel wings map. So you will end up with 2 sets of hair, one curved to the right and the other curved to the left.
Once you cut one set of map feathers, turn the template over to cut the other set the other way.
How To Make Paper Feathers Using A Feather Template
4. Once all the feathers are cut out, you are ready to assemble the angel wings.
Glue the feathers one by one to the cardboard wings. Starting with the longest hair, apply glue to the bottom third of the hair. Glue the feathers to the top of the wings.
5. Next, add another row of large map feathers overlapping the first row. Continue adding a row of feathers making sure the bottom cardboard is not visible.
Once the large feathers (3 rows) are done, glue the medium sized feathers to the wings. Then glue a small hair from the bottom to the top.

6. When you get to the last row of small feathers, they will probably overlap the tip of the wing. Once the glue dries simply cut the edges with a pair of scissors.
Made from only paper and cardboard, these upcycled angel wings are super light and easy to display.
I found an old big frame in my shed. Using gray paint, I painted the frame and backing board. Then I hung my wings frame and mounting tape. The page is not placed back in the frame.
I love the angel wings of this map so much, I made a fall version of the angel wings out of painted pine cones.

1. Draw and cut 2 angel wings from cardboard. Angel wings should be mirror images of each other.
5. You should end up with 2 sets of feathers that are mirror images of each other, like wings.

6. Glue a row to the top of the cardboard wings, starting with the big feathers. Apply glue only to the top half of each feather.
7. Continue adding wing feathers making sure each row overlaps by about 50%. When you reach the top of the wing, move on to smaller feathers. You should end up with a little fur at the top.
9. Use double-sided mounting tape to mount the wings to the picture frame. Or just stick them directly on the wall without a frame.

How To Make Denim Feathers & A Stunning Wall Decor

This is amazing. What is the basic size of the cardboard wings for the number of feathers listed?
Fortunately, each wing is about 60-70cm (24-28 inches) long and about 25cm (10 inches) at the tip. But you can make it any size you want. Inside: A step-by-step tutorial on how easy it is to make denim feathers from scraps and then hang these feathers as beautiful boho wall art.
I came up with the idea for this denim fur wall decoration in the summer while making denim tassels. It’s not a great leap to figure out how to make denim fur out of old jeans. The principle is similar to tassels, fraying scraps of old denim. I only have a few details to work with, like the spine and the shape of the feathers.

You can make indigo or white wool from denim scraps. The color depends on how you put the template on the scrap fabric.
Like the tassels, this is a great craft for those of us who find our fingers uncomfortable while watching TV.
I made this feather while watching the brilliant Netflix series Stuck in the Ozarks. Maybe that’s why I made a bunch of hair and hung it on the wall.
In addition to creating feather wall hangings, you can use individual denim feathers to make earrings, bag charms, and gift toppers.

1.. The first thing is to cut out the fur shape from your denim scraps. If you are not sure about doing this freely, you can download my feather template and use it to draw the shape of the feather before cutting it.
Make sure the template lies in the same direction as the weave of the denim. The way you place the fur pattern on the denim will depend on the color of the fur you are going to make. Denim is made by weaving blue and white threads.
3. Cover Twine in fabric glue and stick to the center of the denim fur shape. This will form the backbone for the hair.
You can stitch twine in place if you want to glue it. However, glue is good because it also stiffens the twine which helps the denim hair to keep its shape.

4. To make fur, fray the denim by pulling the thread. Denim is distressed by removing threads of one color.
Therefore, removing the white thread will end up with blue feathers. If you remove the blue thread, you will have white fur.
To make the denim fur wall hanging, I first crocheted blue fur and white fur yarn through the same wooden beads.
