Sophie Felts Floral Design, a DC-based floral design studio run by Sophie Felts, has a long history with hydrangeas. “When I started about seven years ago, I bought 40 hydrangea plants from a farmer who was selling them and planted them in my backyard,” Felts says. “They got quite big and we cut them from these plants at almost every summer wedding.”

“Hydrangea is perfect for classic, tailored brides,” says Felts. “Because they are so full and round, they suit this style of design.” Although historically known for a more tasteful design look, artificially arranged for many traditional weddings, the latest design trends of all kinds have taken on rounded expressions.

Usually best for tops, Felts explains, hydrangeas can be tricky because they need a lot of water in bunches and wilt if they’re in water for more than a few hours. There are certain varieties, such as the Dutch hydrangea, that impress you with their large, hard stems.

“Lately dyed flowers are very popular, you can even find dyed hydrangeas!” Felts shares. Equal parts romantic and playful, this pink bouquet of hydrangeas and garden roses made an impression thanks to florist Sadia Fleurs.
