If you’d rather draw your design on your pumpkin than carve or drill into it, a simple black Sharpie will work wonders.

Toothpicks are a great way to correct mistakes. If you accidentally cut off part of the pumpkin, don’t panic, you can use a toothpick to reattach the part back to the pumpkin.
A must-have is petroleum jelly for carved pumpkins. Use jelly to carve your pumpkin and keep it fresh longer.
If you’re new to carving or don’t want the stress of carving a large pumpkin, it’s best to find one that’s easy to carve. We recommend using golden fall squashes because one of these squash varieties is easy to carve and still has a medium and large squash. If you want a big pumpkin (but aren’t easy to carve), Gold Rush pumpkins are worth checking out.
When choosing a pumpkin to carve, check your pumpkin for rotten or discolored spots. It’s best to find a pumpkin without any imperfections, if possible!

There is no right or wrong way to carve a pumpkin, but it is best to cut the bottom to preserve the pumpkin after carving. I find that when I’m carving a pumpkin for decoration it’s best to cut off the bottom of the pumpkin with a pumpkin saw, but if you’re going to use the pumpkin as a candy bucket, cut the top so that you can get to it. ‘lid’.
The main thing that dries out your pumpkin is a lack of moisture. When you cut off the top of the pumpkin and remove the stem, you are actually causing the rotting process to start and rot from the top and go down, ruining your pumpkin.
If you cut the pumpkin off the bottom and leave the stem intact, the rotting process will be much slower and your pumpkin will last longer. A carved pumpkin will usually last three to five days unless you live in a cold climate. There are also other tips you can follow for preserving your pumpkin after carving it – scroll down!
Raise your (burnt) hand if you had a bad dream by putting a candle in a pumpkin! Every year I burned my hand without fail lighting a candle or tealight in a pumpkin. I will reach down and the flames will reach up and burn me. To avoid this, I’d try putting a lit tea light in the pumpkin, hoping the flame wouldn’t go out. What a nightmare!

To counteract this unnecessary stress, you can cut off the bottom of the pumpkin, place a tea light or candle where you want, and turn the pumpkin upside down. No burnt hands, no mess! Or if you prefer to cut back on the top, opt for a battery-operated tea light.
Being able to level your pumpkin is a game changer. We are never guaranteed a perfect pumpkin, especially if we leave pumpkin picking until the last minute.
Having the ability to level your pumpkin opens up options when it comes to growing pumpkins. You don’t have to fight for the ‘rightest’ pumpkin, you can buy cheap ‘wobbly’ pumpkins and it’s not the end of the world if you are late picking your pumpkin.
Are you ahead of the curve when it comes to carving pumpkins? You take your pumpkin home, print out your favorite pumpkin template and fit it into your pumpkin only to find that when you cut out the lid of your pumpkin you either free up space for your design or you need to trim your design.

Cutting the lid off the pumpkin can greatly reduce the space you have left to carve. By cutting off the bottom, however, you can make a hole to clean the pumpkin, keeping it invisible to the eye and providing extra space.
Be creative with your lighting this year. While candlelight is very natural and atmospheric, we should consider changing things up. There are so many options when it comes to using wired lighting and you can still recreate the soft glow of a candle without worrying about it running out!
So you’ve found your pumpkin and decided if you’re going to outdo it. Now it’s time to remove it. It sounds scary, but it’s Halloween!
For many, carving a pumpkin is a sad affair. It wears you out, it’s never as easy as it should be, and it gets everywhere! This year I’ll give you some top tips for carving your pumpkin quickly and easily.

Pumpkin guts are everywhere, so it’s a good idea to lay out some newspaper, cling film, or parchment paper and use that as a cutting surface. Once you’ve gutted your pumpkin, you can easily scoop up the surface and discard, compost, or use in a recipe.
If you cut your pumpkin from the top, you can easily remove the lid with the stem, but how do you remove the bottom?
If you’re going in from the bottom, it’s easiest to make a hole that’s slightly larger than your fist, but small enough that you can’t see the pumpkin as it rises. Once you’ve cut out your circle, cut a small triangular notch on the circumference of the circle. This will allow you to use your fingers or a tool to slide into the notch and gently move the bottom of the pumpkin.
Instead of scooping out the pumpkin guts one at a time, use a large metal spoon to move and loosen the insides of the pumpkin. Scrape out the inside of the pumpkin so that most of the inside comes out at once.

After you’ve cleaned the insides, use a flat scraping tool to clear the pumpkin walls of any loose and leftover debris. This pumpkin carving set is perfect for all stages of cleaning and carving your pumpkin, making the experience even more enjoyable.
I like to thin out the side of the pumpkin I want to carve. This makes it much easier to carve out fine details when the time comes.
When you’re happy with the inside of your pumpkin, clean it with a mixture of bleach and water to protect your pumpkin and prevent it from rotting.
I will also scrub the outside of the pumpkin with a vegetable brush and a wet cloth. Dry your pumpkin or let it air dry overnight.
