Magic The Gathering Fan Art – Wizards of the Coast has suspended a freelance artist after discovering allegations that he plagiarized fan art while creating artwork for a new Magic: The Gathering card.
The art in question can be found in the new Crux of Fate reissue available as part of the new Strixhaven set. This card depicts two dragons, Nikola Bolas and Ugin the Spirit Dragon, fighting. The image of Nicole Bolas is almost identical to her fan art created by Keith Lapenia uploaded to her DeviantArt in 2016.

His Lapeña, who online he goes by the name Scarypet, posted a video on his Twitter showing the extent of the plagiarism. Nicole Bolas’ pose on the card isn’t identical to Rappeni’s fan art, but just by rotating the dragon’s limbs, you can see that the silhouette and even many of the finer details of the work are identical.

In response, Wizards released the following statement: do so. Incorporation. These actions are contrary to Wizards’ values, and as a result, we are suspending future employment with Jason Felix until this matter is successfully resolved.”

I’m a mythical programmer. I was active as a player since 1995, but I took a break before entering high school and returned in 2011. After returning to Japan, I was frantically collecting nostalgic cards (such as dual lands) that were in my collection in order to break into the legacy scene. Collecting duals had to be done on a tight budget, so trading was the only option. I started an Echo database (early 2012) to calculate quick trades during a period of high volume online trading. I am very proud to be a product writer and still love mtg. Echo is a great way to experiment with UI design and my favorite hobby.
The 2022 standard rotation will happen shortly with the release of Dominaria United. MTG Arena attracts thousands of new players to the game of Magic each year.
