The topography of South America resembles a bowl – there are large mountains on the edge and a relatively flat interior. The mainland consists mainly of lowlands, highlands and the Andes mountain range, which is the longest mountain range in the world.
The Andes, or Andes, stretch nearly 7,000 km across the continent, from top to bottom. The mountains pass through Venezuela, Ecuador, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile and Argentina. The highest peak of the Andes is Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, with a height of 6960.8 meters. It is the highest mountain outside of Asia.
The Amazon flows from the west to the east in the north-central part of South America, and it is the largest river in the world in terms of volume of water. By some definitions, the Amazon is also the world’s longest river – while the Nile is generally considered the longest river, some studies suggest an alternative source for the Amazon, which would actually make it the world’s longest river. The Amazon Basin (Amazonia) is covered by the world’s largest rainforest, and through its heart flows the Amazon River and more than 1,000 tributaries, seven of which are over 1,000 miles long. Measurable precipitation here averages 200 days per year, with total precipitation often reaching 100 inches per year.
This small desert (or plateau) is sparsely populated and is located high in the Chilean Andes. It is a cold place and one of the few deserts on earth that does not rain. It is about 100 miles wide and 625 miles long. The landscape is completely barren, dotted with small lakes, remnants of lava flows, and salt deposits.

The same is true for areas near the equator, including the Amazon rainforest. Trade winds regulate temperatures in the north-east of the continent, meaning the climate in Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana is much cooler than their neighbors to the west.

Five South American countries – Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela – are considered “megadivers”. A megadiverse country is a country that is home to most of the world’s extant species and has a large number of endemic species.
