Mens Bucket Hat Pattern – After breaking my wrist almost two months ago, I am just a week away from my work as a hairdresser. I have a way of staying still to strengthen my wrist and hand and my range of motion is very limited, but the more I can use it (without overdoing it, of course), the stronger and more flexible it will become. Bah!
I’m stumbling on Instagram with this year’s #sewphotohop. September was not my sewing month. But I posted a vacation photo and asked for suggestions on a pattern for a men’s hat. I have to say a big thank you to Jane (from CraftyJane) for recommending the Elbe Textiles bucket hat pattern! To really add the icing on the cake, IT’S A FREE DOWNLOAD! Easy to ‘buy’, it is printed on 3 separate A4 (or Letter) sheets and is available in 4 different sizes. And coincidentally, it looks almost exactly like the one I’m wearing in the vacation photo.

The pattern pieces are printed to be placed on folded fabric, but to get the most out of your fabric you may want to completely line the pieces and cut them from one layer of fabric. This is how it appears in the layout diagram. I used scraps so the folded pieces were fine. I even had to put another stitch in the center of the back of the hem, but I managed to cut it out of some pretty skinny scraps!

The wax print cotton is from Shepherds Bush Market (they have a great stall there with lots of wax print options) – these are the cutouts of a pair of pajamas I made for MrA. The denim is left over from the Rainbow Sewing Machine Shorts I made for Pride earlier this year.
It comes together quite quickly, but I would like to ask you to take your time. Don’t miss any of the guide seams or dimples as this really helps keep all the curves accurate and smooth.

The part I didn’t expect came right at the end when the seams underneath were pressed onto the main body of the hat and it was stitched all the way around.

I thought this might be a little clunky, but it all fitted really well and ended up being really neat. It’s a great hat and to say I’m glad I started making it again would be an understatement.
I am a size medium and it fits my head perfectly. However, it should be noted that I am known for looking awful wearing hats. Very rarely do I find one that suits me well. Conversely, MrA looks great in any hat he puts on his head and I think this one will be his! He likes it inside out because it goes with his pajamas! … I wonder how much wear and tear he will get out of this particular combination…!
For me I think I need to shorten the height a bit and make the brim a bit smaller. So I took 1.5cm off both and made another one. (Not just rainbow wire, I have rainbow tape too!)
This denim is thicker. It’s meant to be winter jeans…when I get around to making them, I know where to look when I run out of belt! The liner is a piece of fabric my hair client gave me, I think she said it was from Tonga… I love it and wish I had more. I drew a strip to go on which I folded and sewed to the main pieces first. It is 2.5 cm wide with 1 cm seams.

Super fast download. I can’t wait to start making my hat! Thank you very much!!! I’m editing this review because when I downloaded the pattern it wasn’t the correct size of 1″ square. I like this pattern a lot, but it didn’t download to the right size. I had to copy again to 120% to to get the pattern to the right size very annoying with this I wasted a lot of ink and paper to come up with the pattern I bought 3 hat patterns from this store and had to adjust all 3 of them wish it was easier to get the right size pattern to be found.
Now this is my hat pattern it’s very easy fits perfect and the brim is a great size to keep the sun out without being flimsy i made mine without the band
Made of denim and cotton lining. It turned out cute! The pattern is perfect and easy to follow for me, a beginner. 🙂 Oh, and I love that it’s reversible.
