Graduation Hat Gift Boxes Tutorial
This mortarboard cover is made of poster board and foam core… it’s easy and fun to celebrate graduation achievements.
From a sheet of black poster board, measure 2.5 inches, and fold. Then cut 6-8 slits straight down to fold from one side. (See photo – note, photo shows an example of using paper instead of posterboard.) [Click on photo to view larger]
Draw the poster board into a circle (see first photo below.) Measure the child’s head if it helps determine the size. (Even if the edges overlap by about an inch, they are sewn to fit)
Take a 48-60 inch gold thread, and double it, and double it again, so you have 4 strands. Tie each end.

You have two options here. Use a 4-inch piece of gold, as shown here, or simply make a tassel using gold thread.
Fringe version: roll along the edges, then tie with the ends of the twine.
Use the pointed end of the brad to make a small hole in the center of the foam core. Use a toothpick to push the knot at one end of the thread through the hole. Position the tassel so that 1 inch or more of the string falls over the sides of the hat. On the hat, tie a tassel if necessary to secure it. Thread the brad through the hole in the top of the hat to secure the strap as well.
