Giraffe Gerald is tall, rough and rough. She wants to dance but lacks confidence in her abilities. When he tries to join the annual Jungle Dance, the other animals laugh at him because everyone knows giraffes can’t dance. Gerald left the dance floor feeling useless and depressed.

Unbeknownst to Gerald, a cricket was watching. It supports and advises giraffes – “Sometimes when you’re different, you need a different song.” This advice inspired Gerald to find his rhythm and enjoy his dancing.

Other animals gathered to watch the giraffe’s movements. They were amazed at her dancing skills. When asked how he can dance so well, Gerald tells them that anyone can dance if they find music they like.

Our story of the month is Giles Andrea and Guy Parker-Rees’ Wives Who Can’t Dance. Have you read it yet?

This book tells the sweetest story of Gerald the Giraffe, who really wanted to dance… but with his long legs and skinny knees, he was too clumsy and clumsy. The other animals teased him, much to Gerald’s dismay. But with the help of a wise cricketer, Gerald realizes that it’s impossible to be different… you just have to dance to the beat of your own drum!

This book is great because it has a positive message for kids…be yourself and embrace your personality! Plus, there are great rhymes and bold, colorful pictures that your kids will love!

Check out these funny giraffes who can’t dance after reading the story. I included a snack, craft, and free phonics activity to practice the difference between a hard G and a soft G (perfect for Gerald’s name!).

First things first…a snack! This giraffe cookie is inspired by The Devil’s Food and Giraffes Can’t Dance. Cooking it is not only fun, but also delicious! (You can also make these monkey cookies because there are monkeys in the story!)

Handmade crafts are my favorite! It has been heartbreaking to see how much my children’s fingerprints have changed over the years. I never want to forget how small their hands are at any age!

This hand-drawn giraffe is inspired by Jessica’s Plemons Nursery and is a great way to create a memorable piece with Giraffes Can’t Dance. Your little one can create their own Gerald!

Learning English is hard… not only do all letters make different sounds, but some letters make more than one! No wonder kids get confused so easily.

G is one of those tricky letters…it can make a /g/ sound like “garbage” or “green”. But it can also make a /j/ sound like “giraffe” or “germ”. It usually produces /j/ when e, i, or y comes after a G sound. (I say often because there are always rule breakers…like the word “get”).

This FREE sorting activity will help toddlers practice the difference between Hard G and Soft G. This is definitely an advanced skill, so don’t worry if you’re not ready for it. They will be there soon! Even letting them know that G can make multiple sounds is great for phoneme recognition.

Remember that you don’t always have to do ALL the words. Maybe start with just 2-4 words and help your child hear the different sounds of each word. It’s all about exposure and practice!

Hey guys! Ashley here from The Littles & Me. Summer vacation is finally here and with it my favorite things – sunshine, swimming and special time with my girls. One of our favorite pastimes to beat the summer heat is going to the library to get some new books for us. Combine that with craftsmanship and you have a perfect run. I’m excited to share with you one of our newest book-inspired crafts, and one of our favorite children’s books, The Deer. giraffes can’t jump (link link)

If you’ve never read this book, add it to your must-read list. It is beautifully illustrated with a powerful message for children and adults. The story follows a giraffe named Gerald who really wants to dance but has a hard time doing it. Finally, with the encouragement of her friend, she was convinced to dance. It’s all about being yourself and going to your own rhythm, which I absolutely love. What better way to move to your beat than with a giraffe shaker?

Meanwhile, print out the giraffe pattern and cut out the circumference of the head. You can use a pre-painted one or let your child paint the giraffe’s head. We chose to do a few of each.

Toilet Paper Roll Giraffe Marionette

Once you’ve painted the giraffe head, it’s time to assemble the shaker. Take a piece of duct tape and attach it to one side of the pipe. Next, you take the thin tape and wrap it around the tube again. Make sure it’s really safe. You really don’t want the beans flying everywhere!

Check the shaker and add extra tape. Then, when you’re sure the pea won’t go anywhere, you can stick it on the giraffe’s head. We used a glue gun to make it stronger, but the glue should be fine. Confession! You are ready and ready to sing, dance and play.

After using the music shaker to bring the book to life, we put on some music and danced the morning away. It was so nice to see my girls excited about the book coming to life. Total win in my book! I hope you and your kids enjoy making these crafts and have a summer full of sweet memories.
