A resolution submitted to the Texas state legislature urges Texans to think twice before using a certain flag emoji.

Concerned House Resolution 75, “urging Texans not to use the Republic of Chile flag emoji when referring to the flag of Texas,” was introduced Thursday by Republican state representative Tom Oliverson of Cypress.

“Most major email apps provide a number of flag emojis, including the Republic of Chile, but the official flag of Texas, also known as the Lone Star Flag, is not included in the selection,” Oliverson wrote in the text of the resolution. . .
Another issue is that Texas has no built-in emojis (except for the ones you can buy from an app store).
“Too often,” wrote Oliverson, “the Chilean flag emoji is used as a substitute for the Lone Star flag in text messaging and on social media platforms; the Chilean flag proudly represents his country but, despite its similarity to the flag of Texas, It does not represent the state of Texas.”
“The colors of the Chilean flag represent the sky, snow and blood shed in the struggle for freedom, but the blue, white and red of the Lone Star flag represent Texas values of loyalty, purity and bravery,” he wrote.

“Just as our flag can never fully embody the country of Chile, the Chilean flag cannot inspire feelings of pride and passion in the heart of a true Texan,” he continued.
“That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby rejects the idea that the Chilean flag, although a beautiful flag, can in any way compare to or replace the official flag of the State of Texas and urges all Texans not to use the Republic. of Chile flag emoji in digital forums when referring to the Lone Star flag of the great state of Texas,” the resolution reads.

Have you ever noticed how similar the national flag of Chile and the state flag of Texas are? Both are red, white and blue with a single star on the left side. It can be hard to tell the difference. Given the similarities, it’s understandable that some might use the Chilean flag emoji when texting, tweeting or communicating digitally in any way about Texas. And that’s a gross inaccuracy in the eyes of a state legislator.
State Rep. Rep. Tom Oliverson, R-Cypress, introduced a rival resolution Thursday asking Texans not to use the Chilean flag emoji when referring to the Texas flag in “digital forums.” It is not clear from the resolution what, if any, consequences would come to those who used the emoji inappropriately. In HCR 75, Oliverson writes:
“The Lone Star Flag has a great history, beginning with its adoption as the third flag of the Republic of Texas by President Mirabeau B. Lamar and the Texas Congress in 1839, and just as our flag could never fully embody the country of Chile, Nor can the Chilean flag inspire feelings of pride and passion in the heart of a true Texan; now, therefore, be it resolved, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby rejects the idea that the Chilean flag, though a Beautiful flag, can in no way compare or replace the official state flag of Texas and urge all Texans not to use the Republic of Chile flag emoji in digital forums when referring to the Lone Star flag of the great state of Texas. Flag up there. Is your heart swelling with pride? You are not alone. Most Texans feel the same way. The very suggestion that the Texas flag could be torn down is offensive on a fundamental level to people who Know that Lone Star can’t.

Texas State Rep: Stop Using The Chilean Flag Emoji
Still, that pride doesn’t stop many Texans from making an embarrassing blunder when texting. Unfortunately, there is no official Texas flag emoji, probably because if there was, the other states would be jealous and we would have scrolled through all the inferior flag emojis to find the Texas one. However, it is the flag of the Republic of Chile that bears aesthetic similarities to the flag of Texas. Both have a white bar across the top half of the design, which adjoins a blue border surrounding a white star. However, the Texas flag – as any school child knows! – has an equal sized red bar below the white bar, while the blue frame on the side spans the full height of the flag. The Chilean flag, on the other hand, intersects the blue section with the star halfway, so that the red bar runs the full length of the design.
The Chilean flag is a beautiful design. It might be the second best flag, who knows, we’re not entering a contest here. The important thing, however, is that it is not the Texas flag. And now, finally, the eighty-fifth Texas legislature—recognizing both the importance of people confusing the two when texting and the fact that such a problem is certainly mutual—has introduced a resolution to correct this egregious practice. Enter HCR75, introduced by Rep. Tom Oliverson, of Houston, which reads:

Resolutions are not binding, so it is not like the law is investigating your texts to determine if you sent someone a Chilean flag to represent the flag of Texas, and there will be no legal sanctions, even for flagrant abuse. You could text a Chilean flag to a police officer on March 2nd without fear of arrest (but please don’t). Rather, it is the kind of thing that is simply meant to raise awareness of an issue of concern to all Texans. In these divided times, we think that this bit of legislative stupidity will be a refreshing breath of bipartisanship. I’m so glad to see the Texas Legislature tackle these big issues. This time he issued a resolution against replacing the Chilean national flag with the Texas state flag in texts and social media.
