Draw a hexagon, start by finding something around to make a circle. Next, use a ruler to draw a horizontal line through the center of the circle. Then, take the ruler and draw an “x” on the circle to divide it into 6 equal parts. In this Instructable you will learn how to make a perfect hexagon. It is very easy and can be done in about 3 – 6 minutes. You only need a few items:
1. Open the compass so that it is slightly less than half the paper when you hold it up to the paper.

Hexagons look cool, right? But how does it work? For starters, you need to know that the interior angles of a triangle add up to 180°. Knowing this, we divide the hexagon into triangles, and we get 6 equal triangles. Then, we divide the triangles by 3 to find each angle, and we get 60 °. Looking at the image above, you can see that there are 2 60° angles that form part of the triangle for each corner of the hexagon. This explains that each interior angle of a hexagon is 60° + 60° which is equal to 120°. So that means if you take a ruler and draw a straight line, say 2 inches, then take a ruler and measure 120° and repeat 5 times, it will be your perfect hexagon in the end. After we learned all the 2D shapes, I loved this lesson about putting them together to create hexagons in different ways. I gained great insight into my students’ general understanding of geometry with this fun and challenging activity!
After briefly explaining and modeling the “math mission,” I gave the students a record sheet and a wooden pattern block. After finding 6 ways to make a hexagon, they used a paper pattern block shape to glue their solution.
We then gathered on the carpet where I had a poster version of the registration sheet on the floor. Students took turns using our large foam pattern blocks to share the techniques we discovered.
