Pumpkin Carving Patterns Owl – Every year I try to make a pumpkin to celebrate, and it’s a convenient excuse to roast pumpkin seeds! (Obviously I can be tempted to do just about anything to eat).

Granted, it’s a few notes harder than the triangle-eyed jack-o’-lantern I used to carve as a kid, but believe it or not, it’s totally doable! All you need are some basic pumpkin carving tools, a pattern for carving, toothpicks and glue sticks. Oh, and a pumpkin!

Get your equipment! They sell basic carving tools at Duane Reade, CVS, etc for ~$5, and most of them come with patterns. I’ve been using these inexpensive sets for years and they work great.

Choose a Pattern! I’ll admit I’m a weirdo, the only person I know who spends so much time thinking about what to do with my pumpkins every year. I work for hours on designs and even – last year I couldn’t find one I liked, so I drew my own! Yes… crazy. If you want more options than your tool kit, you can find tons of patterns online.

We all know step 1 from our youth – cut off the top and remove the seeds! Be sure to save those seeds for later roasting but see more about that in Wednesday’s post! Take out the turmeric inside. If you’re making a very wide shape, it’s a good idea to thin your pumpkin a bit more until it’s about 3/4″ thick. (If it’s too thick, it’s harder to make a wide shape, But any thinner and the pumpkin will shrink pretty quickly in a day or two).

I like to cut a hole in the bottom because this is the area that rots first. It makes placing a candle so easy!

Once you’ve chosen a shape, the next step is to turn it into a pumpkin. You can draw a pattern directly onto the pumpkin with a permanent marker or trace the pattern onto parchment or tissue paper.

Take a toothpick, follow your pattern, and then poke small holes in the surface of your pumpkin to know where to cut.

I’ve always loved carving pumpkins for Halloween, and using home grown pumpkins makes it even more special for me. I am happy to take care of them all summer long and carry those endless buckets of water, but something small can still be good……..

I’m using an owl template that I use for my silk painting, and I thought it would be fun to translate it into a pumpkin.

You can try tracing it onto the pumpkin, but I prefer to draw it free-handed using the diagram as a guide.

First I used a pencil to lightly sketch the owl, and when I was happy with the size and shape of the design, I used a bio to clearly carve the lines.

Then I used a small scalpel knife to cut off the skin of the pumpkin, removing the orange layer, but not going all the way through.

Using an even smaller scalpel, I began by carefully cutting out the curves in the middle.

Light pressure with the knife gave a nice initial curve, which I carved deeper, bringing out the individual tones.

I worked the larger feathers into the feathers, cutting each wing in half lengthwise to reapply the 2 colors.

I later decided that more light might be needed, so narrow slits were carved through the skin in the feathered areas.
