Palancas Letters – I prefer to write and receive letters by e-mail or regular mail. Writing or receiving a letter in the mail is a different feeling. This is because handwriting is good proof that someone actually wrote the letter expressing their thoughts and emotions.

Last week I was putting away my things and found a bag and a small closet full of correspondence and memorabilia from my elementary school, high school and college when the internet was unheard of (except when I was in my third year). the college has a library, there are internet ports available), and the beeper was the fashion, not the text message. It is now the 2000s and the Internet is always available. However, letter writing is always personal and always something to look forward to. Now it’s either a bank statement or a mailbox account. So you can imagine if I received a postcard from my friend who is a monk with no Internet access in the US, or a colorful postcard from my friends here and abroad. I also love receiving greeting cards and Christmas cards.

I remember it now because on my birthday last July, my sister gave me a letter that my father wrote on my birthday when I was still single and in Chicago—a letter that I never received. Aye said she found it in our mother’s old folders in our old house. (He called me May.)

I believe this was his reply to my letter about my decision to marry a stranger whom they were yet to meet, seeking his and mother’s blessings.

I will never turn my back on you and there is no problem too big and no pain too deep for us to overcome.

There are many ups and downs in life, and you will find yourself in a variety of situations. Some of them will surprise you and some will disappoint you. I wish I could promise you a life without pain, despair, and anxiety, but I can’t. Even in the midst of hardship and tragedy, life can be fulfilling and you can and will find love and joy. You have already demonstrated your resilience and compassion, and I am very proud of you.

I hope you continue on the righteous path of joy and acceptance. Whatever God throws at you, you will rise up and find peace and happiness. Keep your heart open to love and you will find yourself respected and cherished. If you are always true to your heart, you will never feel regret or guilt. I see your strength at your young age.

You are a unique young man in your own right, and I wish you to remain that way. Never let others tell you how to be or whom to love. If you live the way others expect you to, you will end up in a place you don’t like. Keep faith in your heart and God will guide you through life.

I am proud of the person you are becoming and will always be open to any challenge, adventure or suggestion you may have.
