A: I think about $16-45 per 454g (16oz/1lb) is the normal price, depending on the source and type of wool. A cat hole is expected to be worth $40 to $80 in wool. You can think of it like a quilt or a knitted sweater, the material looks expensive at first but turns out to be priceless.
Felt Cat Bed
A: Normal felters need 10-15 hours. I would budget 20 hours for beginners. You can stop at certain steps (described in the tutorial) and wait a few days before starting again (if necessary). I made a feature in the tutorial over a 2 month period, stopping many times.
A: I recommend using the wet felt technique to make something smaller before trying it. For simpler projects, there are free tutorials. Especially I will try to make a bowl. Google “rosiepink free tutorials”, she has some free tutorials (not as detailed as my bowl tutorial, but probably enough for you). If this doesn’t work for you, you should first buy and try my bowl tutorial to make a bowl. The cat hole project is a big investment of time and money for beginners, so I would practice on smaller projects first.
This tutorial takes you step by step to touch the cat hole, including flowers, grass, flower buds, and advanced blocking.
These cat litters are made directly from unspun carded wool using a wet felting process. No weaving involved.

This project is for felters who want to take on a large, multi-day project. Not recommended for beginners. If you’ve never done resistance felting before and want to introduce it on a smaller scale, I would recommend my felting bowl tutorial first.

It feels like 10 to 15 hours for your first cat hole (I recommend working in 2 to 4 hours, you can wait hours, days or more between steps). The instructions have details on how to stay moist (or when not) to help you decide when is a good stopping point.
Felt attracts cat hair like a rug. However, unless you use white or black felt, it will usually camouflage and blend in. Always hand wash and towel dry. Never put it in a washing machine or dryer (this could damage it and/or change its shape irreparably).
On Dirt: Spot clean with a damp cloth (warm water), then wipe over the surface as you would a carpet. You can use a small amount of soap. Rinse off with a clean damp towel.
Extreme confusion: For example, let’s say the cat decides to urinate, and the confusion gets absorbed into the felt. To clean, submerge the affected area in warm water and squeeze under water to remove the mess. You can use soap. Make sure to rinse off all soap before drying. Finally rinse with super cold water to help re-harden the area.

In all cases, after cleaning, reshape (important) and towel dry. You can use any type of soap (such as hand sanitizer, laundry soap, or a bar of soap).
The felt of these cat holes is very strong and dense, which means they can withstand friction and warm water without changing shape. Hand washing will not damage items. Washing machines can damage items. Avoid extremely hot water, always use lukewarm water.

Very detailed, great description and photos. Although I’ve been needled for a while, I’ve done limited wet felting. My sister saw someone’s cat hole and asked if I could make one. I told her I would give it a try. I am very satisfied with the results of this tutorial. Some great tips and tricks would definitely help, and while my first cave might not be perfect, it stood up looking pretty good!

This is my first tutorial purchase and I already know I’m happy with it! This tutorial is beautifully done and very, very thorough. My first early self attempt at cathole was a complete failure. (Looks like a zombie outfit at the end! LOL) My second one is ok but too big and not of the gift quality I would like to give. ) Now, with this tutorial, I have everything I need to be successful. Also, I now know what I did wrong myself. If you’ve ever made or tried to make one of these, you know how time-consuming and expensive these can be. I’m new to this and not ready to try this, but as soon as I get more confident in my skill level Kitty will get a new sleeping cave and maybe she’ll stop taking up 1/3 of a king size bed.
